BHUBANESWAR: Emami Group promoted AMRI Hospitals CEO Rupak Barua, on Saturday, announced its collaboration with Asian Cancer Institute (ACI) of Mumbai, and an investment of Rs. 100 Cr to set up a cancer treatment institute at its campus here.

He said a 100 bedded cancer treatment institute would come up by 2017-18.

“We have launched the first phase of our expansion plan by adding 50-bed cancer treatment facility in Bhubaneswar in collaboration with AMRI Hospitals. Now, the cancer patients can get the ACI standard treatments at AMRI – Bhubaneswar”, said Barua.

The announcement was made in the presence of noted oncologist Suresh H Advani, MD, Medical Oncology, ACI, Sanjay Sharma, Director, ACI & Onco- surgeon and Salil Kumar Mohanty, VP, Unit Head, AMRI Hospitals, Bhubaneswar.

According to Advani, in a few coming years, the number of cancer patients will be more than that of the cardiac patient. With the invested fund, AMRI and ACI plan to provide better health service.

Under this collaborative initiative, AMRI Hospitals & Asian Cancer Institute (ACI) is all set to provide a holistic oncology care to the cancer patients getting treated at AMRI, Bhubaneswar by conforming to the high standards of protocol and treatment that are offered at ACI, Mumbai.

AMRI will have state-of-the-art equipment for cancer treatment, including advanced Cyberknife therapy.

For now, treatment will be carried out by 3 Oncology experts coming from Mumbai, with some other Cancer experts from Bhubaneswar here.

Cancer Population in India is around 45 lakhs, of which, around ten lakhs of new cancer patients are getting added every year. While men in India are getting afflicted mostly with cancer of head and neck, lungs and prostate, women are going largely diagnosed with breast cancer along with ovarian and cervical cancer.

Referring to the heavy traffic of cancer patients of travelling to other cities for the better treatment, Suresh H Advani, MD, Medical Oncology, ACI, said, “Cancer is increasingly becoming a widespread malady. The causes of cancer and the new areas of treatments are still being studied and addressed globally. Through this collaborative endeavour, Asian Cancer Institute will try to reach out its services beyond Mumbai and offer world class treatment in cancer to the whole country.”

Under this initiative of extending its expertise in comprehensive cancer care across the country, each centre of Asian Cancer Institute (ACI) will be supported by the local cancer specialists whose expertise will be reinforced by professional help from the Mumbai Center. The specialised quality services at all the centres will be offered at an affordable cost. “This collaboration between AMRI Bhubaneswar and ACI is going to open a new horizon of cancer treatment not only for the people of Odisha but will cater to the entire eastern part of the country. Patients from these regions would no more be required to travel as far as to Mumbai to avail cancer treatment of global standards from institutions like ACI. AMRI Hospitals Bhubaneswar has brought the same facility closer to home with this collaboration. .” Said, Rupak Barua.

Along with the institute, AMRI and ACI are going to organise ‘Cancer Awareness Camps’, which will play a vital role in minimising the number of cancer patients. They plan to open it in Sambalpur, Bargarh and Angul districts of Odisha.

Association of Asian Cancer Institute Mumbai, which provides world-class treatment for cancer patients, will be available to the people of Odisha now. Moreover, through this collaboration, medical students of Odisha will also be benefitted from their exposure to the best interventions in cancer care Further, the collaboration will be much more cost effect given the reduction in outstation travel & stay cost..”
