Marginal increase in crimes in Odisha in 2017: White Paper


Bhubaneswar: The Odisha saw a marginal increase in registration of crimes with 1,03,866 cases registered during 2017 against 1,03,602 in 2016.

Out of the total, 87,297 cases were registered under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and charge sheets were filed in 70,045 cases.

These were revealed in the White Paper released by the State Home Department on Wednesday.

Besides, Odisha also witnessed a surge in rape cases in 2017 as  2,221 cases were registered in 2017 against 2,144 cases in 2016. Charge sheets have been filed in 1,401 out of the total cases, the report stated.

According to the White Paper, a total of 1,267 murder cases were registered in 2017 and charge-sheets were filed in 643 cases. Police arrested as many as 1,691 persons, including 72 inter-State miscreants, in 543 dacoity cases registered in the year.

While lethal weapons were recovered from miscreants in 60 incidents, assets worth 3, 28, 24, 417 were recovered from dacoits. Charge-sheets were filed in 231 dacoit cases.

As many as 2,048 loot cases were registered in different police stations in 2017. While 3,953 burglary cases were registered, charge-sheets were riled in 1,173 cases. Similarly, 9, 083 theft cases were filed in 2017 and the police filed charge-sheets in 3,195 cases and assets worth Rs 19,83,26,805 were recovered.

As many as 2,960 cheat cases were filed and charge-sheets were filed in 827 cases. Various financial institutions committed these frauds by taking money from people and returning them as promised.
