Smuggled gold bars worth Rs 9.64 lakh seized at city airport


Bhubaneswar: The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs and Excise on Friday seized more than 300 grams of gold from a passenger at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here.

The smuggled gold cylindrical bars were being smuggled inside wheels of trolley bag of a passenger, who arrived at Bhubaneswar airport from Kuala Lumpur in AirAsia flight.

A Chennai-based man was detained by the Customs sleuths in this connection.

Acting on spot intelligence, officers of Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at the airport intercepted a passenger of Indian origin, hailing from Chennai, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flight on the intervening night of May 3 and 4, said a press release issued by Assistant Commissioner of Customs.
