Nimapara IIC shifted over thrashing woman at police station

OHRC seeks inquiry report on Nimapara torture incident

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Thursday asked the Inspector General of Police, Central Range to submit an inquiry report on torturing a woman at Nimapara police in Puri.

Acting on a petition, the Commission has asked to submit the report within two weeks.

The petitioner alleged that Mrutyunjay Swain, IIC, Nimapara Police Station had thrashed 75 years old woman namely Basanti Palata of Dhirapur Dalei Sahi on May 7.

The victim had gone to the Police Station along with her son being called by the IIC on a complaint lodged by the daughter-in-law of Basanti Palata.

It is alleged that in utter disregard to the provisions of law, the IIC directed a woman to come to the Police Station for interrogation, which is prohibited under Section 160 of the Cr.PC, said the petitioner.

No notice was also sent to the victim under Section 41 of the Cr.PC.  The petitioner further stated that transferring a police officer or suspending him from duty for violating the law of the land is no punishment.

Hence, the petitioner prayed for a direction to the DG of Police for taking strong action against the IIC, Nimarapara Police Station.

Notably, the IIC has been shifted to Puri district headquarters following the report of thrashing the elderly woman.
