Will oppose entry of non-Hindus inside Jagannath temple: Singhari Nijog

Bhubaneswar: President of Singhari Nijog Ramchandra Singhari on Sunday said the servitors will oppose the entry of people of other faith inside the Jagannath temple in Puri.

“We are against proposals of allowing non-Hindus inside the Puri Srimandir. We want that the the age-old tradition of the shrine remain intact,” he said.

Notably, the Supreme Court has suggested for allowing non-Hindus inside the 12th century shrine in Puri.

A 22-member delegation of Chhatisa Nijog Sevayats on Sunday met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Naveen Nivas in the presence of Puri MP Pinaki Mishra and Puri MLA Maheshwar Mohanty. They discussed about the interim order of the apex court.

Puri MP Pinaki Mishra said the sevayats have given a representation to the Chief Minister stating that they were not heard by the apex court while passing the interim orders on July 5.

He said the opinion of Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb and other concerned persons should be taken into account and a report in this regard be submitted in Supreme Court.

“The next hearing in the court is scheduled to be held on September 5. In the meantime, the servitors can keep their views before amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium, who will visit Puri,” said the Puri MP.
