Hirakud Dam to open sluice gates first time this monsoon season


Bhubaneswar: The sluice gates of Hirakud reservoir will be opened for the first time in the current monsoon season to release flood waters, informed Water Resources Secretary PK Jena on Monday.

The authorities will open sluice gates on Tuesday at 11 am.

By 6 pm, the water level of Hirakud Dam stands at 616.45 feet while the inflow of water was measured at 1,54,379 Cubic feet per second (Cusecs) and outflow at 11,369 Cusecs.

Jena said that 7.5 lakh cusecs water will flow through Munduli barrage by 3 pm due to which a small or medium flood will occur.

“Hirakud Dam authorities will open gates tomorrow and 3 lakh cusec of water will be released,” said Jena.

The state government asked the district collectors of Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapra and Khurda to remain alert and be prepared to face the flood like situation.
