Konark police to take Abhijit Iyer on 4-day remand


Bhubaneswar: A local court in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday allowed the Konark police to take security analyst and columnist Abhijit Iyer Mitra on a four-day remand for interrogation into his alleged derogatory remarks against Sun Temple.

The sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) court allowed the Konark police to take Iyer-Mitra on a four-day remand.

The Konark police had appealed to the court for permission for taking him on a seven-day remand.

Notably, Iyer was arrested on Tuesday by the Commissionerate police in connection with a criminal case filed against him at Saheed Nagar Police Station on September 20 for derogatory remarks against Odisha culture.

Following his arrest, he was produced before the SDJM court here that sent him to a 14-day judicial custody. He was lodged at the Jharpada Jail.

Notably, two FIRs have been lodged separately against Iyer for abusing Odisha culture on social media.

Earlier on Tuesday, Abhijit appeared before a House Committee headed by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra over breach of privilege.

Ayer, who is accused of giving derogatory remarks against the lawmakers in Odisha, tendered an apology before the committee.
