Puri custodial death: Odisha govt transfers SP

Bhubaneswar: Following alleged custodial death in Puri, the Odisha government on Friday transferred Puri SP Akhileshwar Singh and attached to police headquarter.

Sambalpur SP K Vishal Singh has been transferred and posted as Puri SP.

Tension erupted in Puri town on Thursday over alleged custodial death of K. Ramesh in Baseli Sahi police station on Wednesday night.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday directed the Odisha Chief Secretary and DGP to submit detailed reports on the matter within four weeks.

The Orissa High Court on Friday took note of a PIL seeking court-monitored probe into the Puri custodial death.

The petition alleged that K. Ramesh, a 30-year-old local youth was picked up by the Puri police on Wednesday in connection with some criminal cases pending against him. But, later he was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead on Thursday.

Without informing his family, policemen cremated Ramesh’s body at Swarga Dwara in Puri in the midnight, the petition said.

Meanwhile, several police officials of Baseli Sahi police station have been suspended for gross misconduct and negligence in duty.
