Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish Sri Jagannath International Airport at pilgrim town Puri.

In a letter, the Chief Minister requested the Prime Minister to ask the Ministry of Civil Aviation to take up Puri airport as a priority project.

The proposed airport will help bring Jagannath devotees from across the world to Puri.

Patnaik informed that land has been identified for airport and the state government will extend all possible assistance to the Centre for establishing the airport in a record time.

Puri, the abode of Lord Jagannath is revered as one among the Char Dhams and crores of Hindus from across the globe visit the temple every year.

Apart from the world famous RathYatra, Puri is organically linked to two Ramsar sites—Chilika Lake on one side and Bhitarkanika National Park on the other.

“We believe that Puri has potential to become a hub for spiritual, tourism and economic activities,” said Patnaik.
