Resolution for 15% reservation in engineering, medical colleges passed

Bhubaneswar:  A resolution for 15 per cent seat reservation in engineering and medical colleges for government high school students of Odisha was passed unanimously in the state Assembly on Tuesday.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik moved a resolution in the Assembly regarding 15 per cent reservation for government school students in engineering and medical colleges of the state.

Supporting the resolution, leader of opposition Pradipta Kumar Naik said the government should ensure coaching facilities for the government school students.

Congress legislature party leader Narasingha Mishra said the High Power Committee headed by retired judge of Orissa High Court Justice AK Mishra must have examined the legal aspects of the proposal.

He said several states in the country have bought such proposals, which have been challenged in the courts.

In December last year, the state Cabinet had approved the reservation of seats for eligible government school students in engineering and medical colleges. The reservation will be implemented from next academic year onwards.

The State Government had constituted a High Power Committee headed by retired judge of Orissa High Court Justice AK Mishra for making necessary recommendation regarding the reservation of seats.
