Accident at Tata Steel plant in Odisha, 19 injured

Dhenkanal: An accident has occurred due to gas leakage at the blast furnace of Tata Steel’s Meramandali plant in Odisha’s Dhenkanal, leaving 19 people critical.

 All the injured have been admitted to a hospital in Cuttack.

“There is an accident at the blast furnace power plant of Tata Steel Meramandali in Dhenkanal, Odisha, today at around 1 pm during inspection resulting in burn injuries to 19 persons.  They were immediately shifted to the Occupational Health Centre inside our plant and then to Cuttack for further treatment in our ambulance accompanied by doctor and paramedics,” said Tata Steel in a statement.

“We are working closely with relevant authorities and conducting our own internal investigation. Safety remains our top priority and we’re committed to learning from this incident,” it said.

Immediately post the accident, all the emergency protocol services were activated and the area has been cordoned off. The Company is ensuring all necessary information and support to the families of the affected personnel, Tata Steel said.
