Ratan Tata, visionary leader and Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus, passes away at 86


New Delhi: Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, one of India’s largest conglomerates, has passed away at the age of 86 at a Mumbai hospital. The industrialist had recently addressed concerns about his health in a social media post, clarifying that he was undergoing routine medical check-ups due to his age.

The Tata Group confirmed the news of his death in a statement. 

In a heartfelt statement, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed his deep sense of loss: “It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader whose immense contributions shaped not only the Tata Group but also the nation.” Chandrasekaran reflected on the personal bond they shared, saying, “For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than just a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide, and friend. He led by example, and under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally while staying true to its core values of excellence, integrity, and innovation.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, stating, “Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an exceptional human being. He provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest and most respected business houses. Beyond the boardroom, his humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to improving society made him beloved by many.”

The Prime Minister shared these sentiments in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), along with photographs of Ratan Tata.

Rahul Gandhi also offered his condolences, saying, “Ratan Tata was a man of vision who left an indelible impact on both business and philanthropy. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and the Tata community.”

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Ratan Tata Ji, an industry legend and a true national icon. His visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to ethics and immense contributions to India’s growth will inspire generations to come. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will live on forever,” said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in a post on X.

“Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of visionary industrialist, philanthropist #RatanTata. He was a shining beacon of India’s entrepreneurial spirit. He has left an indelible legacy in the business landscape across the world which will inspire future generations. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, friends and followers in the hour of grief. #OmShanti,” posted former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on X.
