Body cameras for police officers in Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to enhance accountability and transparency, the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police have equipped officers at the reception desks of police stations with body cameras.

This initiative aims to record interactions with complainants who come to lodge First Information Reports (FIRs), ensuring that both the police and the public are protected during these encounters.

The decision to implement body cameras follows a series of incidents that highlighted the need for greater oversight, notably the recent assault of an Army officer and a friend at Bharatpur Police Station. This incident raised serious concerns about police conduct and underscored the importance of documenting interactions in a systematic way.

By recording audio and video of the interactions, the body cameras are designed to deter unruly behavior from visitors while also safeguarding officers against false allegations. This technology will serve as a valuable tool in maintaining professionalism and accountability within the police force.

Additional Police Commissioner Uma Shankar Mishra has been actively involved in overseeing the rollout of these devices, visiting various police stations to assess their implementation. The initiative reflects the Commissionerate’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for both the public and law enforcement personnel.
