Major cancer surgery performed at SUM Hospital at Berhampur


Berhampur: A major milestone in healthcare for southern Odisha was set when a major head and neck cancer resection surgery was successfully performed at the SUM Hospital at Berhampur generating new hope for patients in the region.

A 69-year-old male, diagnosed with carcinoma of the right buccal mucosa involving both jaws with cutaneous extension and severe trismus, underwent a technically demanding bite composite resection with neck dissection.

The extensive surgical defect was reconstructed using a forehead flap ensuring both cancer clearance and functional restoration, hospital sources said.

The procedure lasted over six hours and was especially challenging due to the advanced stage of the tumour and severely restricted mouth opening. Despite these complexities, the surgery was accomplished without intra-operative complications.

The patient’s postoperative recovery has been uneventful and he is being shifted from the ICU to the ward.

The surgical team was led by Dr. Sairudra S. Puhan, Consultant in Surgical Oncology. The team also comprised Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Sudhakar Jena, Anesthesiologist Dr. Subhajit Sahu, Critical Care Specialist Dr. Pratyushkanti Mishra and Dr. Priyanka.Mr. Deba Prasad Dash, Director of SUM Hospital, Berhampur, congratulated the team of doctors and the entire OT staff for the successful surgery expressing his satisfaction over the landmark achievement.
