SUM neonatal team help premature baby weighing 772 grams to recover


Bhubaneswar: The neonatal medical team at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here have successfully turned around the condition of a baby girl born at 26 weeks with a birth weight of only 772 grams.

The baby had faced severe respiratory challenges immediately after birth and was quickly shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for immediate attention.

Despite the extreme challenges faced trquiring mechanical ventilation and advanced life support, the baby gradually showed signs of improvement successfully battling complications arising from multiple co-morbidities of prematurity.

Though her survival chances were slim, diligent care and support by the medical team helped her to recover as she spent nearly three months in the NICU.

Prof. (Dr.) Debasish Nanda, Head of the Department of Neonatology, expressed immense joy and praised the team for its relentless effort and the parents for their patience and unwavering support through the ordeal.

The doctors directly involved in the baby’s medical care included Dr. Bhabagrahi Mallick, Dr. Ratan Kumar Das, Dr. Vijai Kumar, Dr. Bineet Panigrahi, Dr. Suresh Kumar Tripathy, Dr. Payal Pradhan, Dr. Shrutiprajna Kar, Dr. Pratyush Dwivedi, Dr. Sitikantha Nayak, Dr. Kalpita Sahoo, Dr. Pujitha and Dr. Sarath Chandrika.

Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra Mishra, Dean and Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar, Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, offered their continuous guidance and support while ensuring that the medical team received all help required for handling this challenging case.

This collaborative effort led to the baby’s recovery which was a testament to the combined skill, compassionare care and the determination of the medical professionals involved.
