Law students have several options for careers: Minister


Bhubaneswar: Law students, if they pursue their studies seriously, have several options before them for charting out successful careers, Mr. Prithviraj Harichandan, Odisha’s minister for Law, Works and Excise, said on Saturday.

“Law has become a serious profession and students should meticulously plan their careers as they have the option of practicing in courts or become judicial officers,” Mr. Harichandan said while speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the two-day ‘Lok Sambad’, a national level youth parliament organised by the SOA National Institute of Law (SNIL), faculty of legal studies of the SOA Deemed to be University, here.


Around 150 students of law from across the country including the states of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Delhi besides Odisha took part in the event.


The minister said the legal profession had undergone a sea change over the years and students were presently pursuing super speciality courses in law. The Odisha government, he said, was recruiting students of law as Research Assistants to assist the administration.


Stating that it was common for law schools to organise Moot Courts, Mr. Harichandan said the concept of a youth parliament was rare while congratulating the organizers of the event.


SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, who presided over the program said the SOA Deemed to be University had grown into a gigantic tree of knowledge within a period of two decades with focus on multidisciplinary education. SOA’s law school had been placed 10th in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings.


The program was also addressed by Prof. S.A.K. Azad, Dean of SNIL and Prof. Jyoti Ranjan Das, Dean (Students’ Welfare). Prizes were given to the participants who excelled in different competitions.
