Bolangir wedding gift tragedy: Parcel sent from Raipur through courier


Bolangir: The police on Saturday said the parcel bomb, which killed a newly-married software engineer and his grandmother, was sent from Raipur through Skyking courier as a marriage gift.

Police said that the parcel weighing 2.10 kg was sent from Raipur through Skyking courier as a marriage gift.

Sources said a team of Bolangir police officials visited Raipur to trace the persons who had sent the parcel.

On Friday, Soumya Ranjan Sahoo and his grandmother Jemamani died while the duo along with Soumya’s wife Reema Sahoo was opening the marriage gifts in Patnagarh of Bolangir district. Reema is now undergoing treatment at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla.

Soumya and Reema were married on February 18.

The mishap occurred when the couple opened the gift that was delivered to them in form of the parcel. Soumya succumbed to injuries while he was being shifted to the Rourkela Ispat General Hospital. His grandmother died at the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital.

Patnagarh SDPO Sesadeba Bariha said the family had received a parcel bomb in the guise of the gift packet which exploded while being opened.

Soumya’s father, a college teacher, was away in Delhi when the incident occurred. His mother, a principal of a local college, was at work too during the mishap.
