Bhubaneswar: One labourer died and another was critically injured after a pile of iron rods fell on them at under-construction flyover that caved in Bomikhal area in Bhubaneswar on Thursday evening.

The labourer, identified as Ajay Vumicha (38) of Sundergarh, died in Capital hospital while Ananda Kumar Nayak was shifted to AMRI Hospital in the city, said sources.

According to reports, two workers were trapped when a stack of iron rods came crashing on them and the two got stuck for around 20 minutes before they were rescued by local people and fire brigade personnel.

Following the incident, a huge crowd gathered at the spot and staged protest demanding immediate arrest of the contractor of the overbridge. The construction work of Bomikhal over-bridge is being executed by Panda Infra.

However, the commissionerate police pacified the angry local residents protesting death of a labourer due to centring failure.

The incident occurred just 50 meter away from the spot where a portion had caved in last year.

Last year on September 10, one person was killed and 10 others were injured after a portion of an under construction Bomikhal flyover bridge collapsed.

Meanwhile, the Congress hit out at the state government for involving in corruption.

“Bomikhal bridge collapse yet again speaks volumes of the malaise with the government. Rampant corruption & inefficiency are the hallmark of this government,” tweeted leader of opposition Narasingh Mishra.
