SOA conducts AICTE-sponsored STTP on clinical trials


Bhubaneswar: A week-long Short Term Training Program on ‘Clinical Trials– Procedures, Design and Interpretation of Results’ was organised at SOA here recently to discuss various aspects of the subject in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic and development of vaccines to counter the virus.

The AICTE-sponsored program focused on current standards for clinical trial protocols, consent procedures, regulatory requirements, principles for data acquisition and design and analysis concepts.

The program, which concluded on August 28, also discussed regulatory requirements for drug development and adverse event monitoring as well as the statistical aspects of data monitoring for clinical trials.

Prof. Sanghamitra Pati, Director, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Bhubaneswar was the chief guest on the inaugural function held on August 23 which was also addressed by the SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra who spoke on Covid vaccine and its limitations.

Dr. Sushant Senapaty, Head Medical Writing, Wipro Digital Operations and Platforms, Kolkata explained the demography in clinical trials while Dr. E. Venkat Rao, Principal Investigator for the indigenously developed Covid vaccine ‘COVAXIN’ shared his experience in conducting two phases of the clinical trials at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital.

The other speakers included Prof. Damodar Acharya, former Chairman of AICTE and presently Chairman of the Advisory Board, SOA, Dr. Harish Chandra Chaudhury, KIMS, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Anurag Satpathy, Institute of Dental Sciences, SOA, Mohammed Hasibur Rehman, L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Sanjeeb Kumar Sahu, Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Mr. Sukanta Kumar Sahu, Labcorp Drug Development, Bengaluru, Dr. Gopal Chandra Kundu, Director, Research and Development, KIIT, Bhubaneswar, Mohammed Zaigham Rabbani, Covance Scientific Services and Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru and Dr. Jagannath Behera of Parexel International, Bengaluru.
