Renowned Odia poet Ramakanta Rath passes away at 90, leaving a literary legacy


Bhubaneswar: Odisha lost one of its most celebrated literary figures as Ramakanta Rath, the legendary Odia poet and former bureaucrat, passed away at the age of 90. His demise marks the end of an era in Odia literature, leaving behind a rich legacy of modernist poetry that continues to inspire generations.

A Life Dedicated to Literature and Service

Born on December 13, 1934, in Cuttack, Rath pursued his master’s degree in English Literature from Ravenshaw University. Though he embarked on a distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1957, his love for poetry remained unwavering. Over the years, he served in key positions, ultimately retiring in 1992 as Chief Secretary of Odisha.

A Literary Genius

Rath was a towering figure in Odia poetry, known for his modernist and philosophical approach to writing. His works delved into deep existential themes, blending tradition with contemporary thought. Some of his most acclaimed poetry collections include:

  • Sandigdha Mrugaya (1971)

His masterpiece, Sri Radha, earned him the prestigious Saraswati Samman in 1992. His poetry has been widely translated into English and several Indian languages, bringing Odia literature to a broader audience.

Ramakanta Rath’s literary brilliance was recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including:

  • Sahitya Akademi Award (1977)
  • Sarala Award (1984)
  • Bishuva Samman (1990)
  • Sahitya Akademi Fellowship (2009)
  • Padma Bhushan (2006) – India’s third-highest civilian award

Beyond writing, Rath played a crucial role in shaping India’s literary landscape. He served as Vice President of the Sahitya Akademi (1993-1998) and later as its President (1998-2003), championing Indian literature on national and international platforms.

A State Honours His Legacy

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over Rath’s passing, announcing that his last rites would be conducted with full state honors.

“Ramakanta Rath was not just a poet; he was a literary giant who enriched Odia literature with his timeless works. His contributions, both as a writer and an administrator, are unparalleled. His demise is an irreparable loss to the literary world,” the Chief Minister said in his condolence message.

Rath’s profound impact on literature and governance will be remembered for generations. As Odisha bids farewell to one of its greatest poets, his verses will continue to echo in the hearts of readers, keeping his spirit alive forever.
