Jio triumphs with double download speed than Airtel in TRAI’s Independent Drive Test


Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s No. 1 digital service provider Reliance Jio has emerged on top with the highest download speed, as per the latest Independent Drive Test (IDT) results, published by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for Rourkela city and Bhubaneswar to Rourkela highway.

The overall download speed clocked by Jio was double that of the nearest competitor, Airtel. Part of TRAI’s routine Quality of Service (QoS) audits, the tests were conducted between 19th August to 22nd August 2025, in Rourkela city and Bhubaneswar to Rourkela highway, under Odisha Licensed Service Area (LSA) covering 355 kms Rourkela city drive test, 331.4 km Bhubaneswar to Rourkela highway, 3.6 km walk test and 8 hotspot locations.

In the tests conducted by TRAI in Rourkela city and Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Highway, Reliance Jio proved its network dominance, delivering the highest overall data download speed of 191.10 Mbps, followed by Airtel with 96.48 Mbps, VI with 17.73 Mbps and BSNL with 3.9 Mbps.

Even in busy hotspots, Jio delivered the highest 5G download speed of 219.43 Mbps, followed by Airtel with 145.66 Mbps. Jio also recorded the highest 4G download speed of 39.77 Mbps in hotspots, followed by Airtel with 36.64 Mbps, VI with 17.02 Mbps and BSNL with 4.4 Mbps.

In terms of 5G upload speed in hotspots Airtel recorded 30.77 Mbps, closely followed by Jio with 25.40 Mbps. Jio also maintained a robust overall upload speed of 18.4 Mbps.

With its consistent network performance, Reliance Jio continues to set the standard for voice clarity, low latency, and ultra-fast mobile data, bringing the promise of Digital India closer to every corner of the country.

As per the latest telecom subscription data, published by TRAI, Jio leads in the wireless, wireline and 5G FWA segments in Odisha with over 1.67 crore mobile subscribers and over 6.14 lakh home broadband subscribers in the state, fueled by its extensive 4G and 5G network.

The detailed Independent Drive tests were conducted under the supervision of the TRAI Regional Office, Hyderabad, to capture real-world network performance across diverse usage environments- Urban Zones, Institutional Hotspots, rural residential areas etc.

As per TRAI, the assessment in Rourkela city included the areas nearby Timjore, Lathikata, Hathibura, Ring Road, Rourkela Bisra Jaraikela Road, Nuagaon, Kuarmunda, Biramitrapur, Bisra, Jhirpani, Koel Nagar, Chhend Main Road, Panposh Road and Pitamahal Dam Road etc. Walk test was conducted at Rourkela Railway Station in Rourkela City.

TRAI also evaluated real-world conditions at Collector Office Rourkela, District and Session Court Rourkela, Govt. Medical Hospital, Municipal Corporation, NIT Rourkela, Rourkela Bus Stand, Rourkela Steel Plant and STI Market Complex in Rourkela City to reflect stationary user experience.

In Bhubaneswar to Rourkela Highway, the assessment included the areas passing through Sunaparbat, Lohadar, Raniberna, Banki, Chandiposh, Musabira, Barghat, Darjing, Juniani, Gudhiali, Jhaliaberna, Kenaveta, Tuniapali, Khulundikudar, Lakhapali, Thianal, Kamakhyanagar and Cuttack etc.
