UN Women To Promote Gender Responsive Governance In Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Entity of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) to promote gender responsive governance.

According to the MoU, it would strengthen the capacities of governance institutions to ensure that gender concerns are embedded in design and implementation of legislation, policies and programmes.

Two pilot districts have been selected under the project-Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj. The government expects that the programme will lead to better outcomes for women. It would improve access to their rights and entitlements through Panchayati Raj institutions.

The State Institute for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj will be the implementing agency for the project, said an official.

The project will be implemented for the duration of 2 years. It would work for strengthening Gender Responsive Governance through the capacity building programmes.

It would conduct training programmes for the elected PRI leaders including elected women representatives, mainstreaming the gender perspectives in the modules and manuals for the training of elected officials and functionaries anchored by SIRD&PR.
