‘The Raffia’, In-house Journal Of Ravenshaw University Released


CUTTACK: “Report news and events in the campus as it happens,” said Ravenshaw University Vice Chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi while releasing ‘The Raffia’, a  monthly in-house journal published by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) here on Monday.

“We had planned to publish a journal highlighting the developmental activities, events, and achievements of the faculty and students of the varsity. But I am glad that the students of JMC have published the in-house journal,” said Sarangi addressing students in the JMC department in the campus.

“Report both positive and negative news and events regarding the university,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

“This journal will give you exposure and help you as a learning tool. Many academic activities of the university do not come to the limelight. Hope, the in-house house journal will highlight the activities,” added Sarangi.

He advised the students to concentrate on vocabulary and language.

Highlighting the need for the in-house journal, senior faculty member of JMC department, Ravenshaw University, Dr. Jayant Kumar Swain said, “This journal will give exposure to the students to report events and happenings, prepare news and publish it. The students will get the real experience of news coverage.”

This will enhance their journalistic skills and help them in their professional career, added Swain.

Explaining the reason behind naming the journal as ‘The Raffia’, editor of the in-house journal and 2nd-year student of JMC department Sumeet Sharma said, “Raffia is a Fibre basically obtained from the leaves of a palm-like tree, which is used for tying and weaving objects like a mat, baskets, and hats. Broadly speaking a container to preserve goods and especially the information, knowledge intertwined with a bit of entertainment as far as the title of this in-house journal is concerned.”

In this journal, the interview, opinion pieces, achievements of students, faculty members and issues concerning students will be published, Sharma informed.

The first issue of ‘The Raffia’ was released by the Vice Chancellor of Ravenshaw University Prakash Chandra Sarangi in the presence of  Course Coordinator Tara Prakash Sarangi, Senior Faculty Dr. Jayant Swain, other faculty members and students of JMC department.
