Over 3,200 people killed in road accidents in Odisha this year


Bhubaneswar: The death toll due to vehicle mishaps in Odisha has crossed 3,200 by the end of September 2016, said a report.

According to state transport department statistics, 3,277 people had died in road accidents till September 30 this year.

While Ganjam district tops the list with 199 deaths, Mayurbhanj recorded 198 fatalities. Bhubaneswar, Jajpur, Balasore, Angul, Sundargarh, and Keonjhar have seen the death of at least 150 people each in road accidents until September this year, said the report.

About 7,788 cases of accidents have been reported in the state by September end with highest 444 mishaps reporting from the capital city. Keonjhar district is second with 408 cases, said the report.

Besides Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Ganjam, Rourkela have seen at least 350 cases of accidents each.

While 4,326 persons received grievous injuries in the accidents, 4097 others sustained minor injuries.

The figures also reveal that during 2013-14 there were around 9,650 accident cases resulting in the death of 3,931 people while 5,667 persons received grievous injuries. Similarly, the state reported 10,542 road accident cases during 2014-15 in which 4,303 persons died while 6,088 persons were seriously injured.
