Odisha govt renames state highways as ‘urban roads’ to bypass SC ban on liquor sale


Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has denotified the state highways passing through cities and towns as ‘urban roads’ to avoid closure of liquor shops following the Supreme Court order.

“Government in works department have been pleased to classify all road sections of works department failing within the limits municipal corporation, municipality, NAC, sub-divisional headquarters, block headquarters and Tehsil headquarters as “URBAN Roads”,” said a government notification.

Notably, the Supreme Court ordered to remove all the liquor shops to a distance of 500 meters from either side of the National Highways and State Highways by March 31.
