NHRC orders probe into suicide of Kunduli gang rape victim

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday ordered a high-level inquiry into the suicide of Kunduli gang-rape victim.

The commission ordered the probe after taking a serious note of the alleged injustice meted out to the minor tribal girl of Kunduli in Koraput district who committed suicide after being reportedly raped by four security personnel.

Acting on a petition filed by rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the Commission asked its DG (Investigation Division) to conduct a probe and submit a report with 15 days.

“The DG (investigation Division) NHRC be requested to conduct a spot enquiry of the incident immediately and submit a report within 15 days. The State authorities be directed to furnish copies of all the reports relating to the case to the team of the commission so that the investigating team while making enquiry should also consider those reports submitting final report to the commission,” read the NHRC order.

The NHRC will take up the issue again on February 23.

The 15-year-old tribal girl of Sorisapadar village, who was allegedly gang-raped by a group of four security personnel on October 10 last year near Kunduli in Koraput, committed suicide at her house on January 22 after being denied justice.
