Bhubaneswar: Vigilance sleuths on Saturday arrested a police Sub-Inspector (SI) for demanding and accepting Rs 20,000 bribe in Khurdha district.
Kausalyaganga Outpost in-charge Benudhar Ray was caught red-handed by the Bhubaneswar division Vigilance sleuths while he was demanding and accepting Rs 20,000 bribe from one Bijaya Kumar Sarangi of Bhapur village under Balipatna police station in Khurda for registration of FIR regarding a theft case.
Sarangi is the proprietor of RBM Group of Security.
Sarangi, who had engaged security staff at Krupajala Engineering College (KEC) in Uttara on February 16, had given a report to SI relating to theft of electric angle and wires from KEC.
Though the accused police officer had received the report, he did not take any initiative to register a case and demanded Rs 20,000 from the complainant for registration of the FIR.
Finding no other option, the complainant reported the matter to the Vigilance Bhubaneswar Division, said a Vigilance statement.
Accordingly, a trap was laid today and the SI was caught red-handed by Vigilance officers in the Outpost, while he was demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant.
The rented residential house of Ray located at Nirakarpur and residential quarters at Uttara Chhak were searched.
