Denied money for liquor, man kills mother in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A person allegedly thrashed his mother to death after she refused to give him money for buying liquor in Odisha’s Angul district, said police on Wednesday.

The incident has occurred at Ugi village near Jarpada in this district on Tuesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Surekha Mahar (70).

Police said Ranjan Mahar, the accused, was a habitual drunkard and often created nuisance in the family.

On that fateful night, he came home and asked Surekha for her old-age pension money that she had received a day back to buy liquor.

An altercation ensued after Ranjan’s mother declined to give money to buy liquor. In a fit of rage, Ranjan thrashed his mother mercilessly, leading to her death on the spot, said police.

The accused was on Wednesday arrested.
