Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty passes away at 66


New Delhi: Renowned Odia actor Uttam Mohanty passed away this evening at the age of 66 while undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. His nephew confirmed the heartbreaking news of his demise.

Mohanty had recently experienced health issues while on a film shoot and was initially treated at a private hospital. Although he returned home after receiving medical care, his condition worsened a few days ago, prompting his admission to a hospital in Bhubaneswar.

As his health continued to decline due to liver cirrhosis, doctors advised his family to shift him to Medanta Hospital for advanced treatment. He was airlifted to the facility, where he was placed on organ support. Despite the doctors’ efforts, the veteran actor breathed his last today.

Uttam Mohanty’s illustrious career began in 1977 with Abhimaan, marking the start of a remarkable journey in the Odia film industry. Over the years, he starred in more than 150 films, including Nijhum Ratira Sathi (1979), Phula Chandana (1982), Jhiati Sita Pari (1983), and Danda Balunga (1984). His versatility extended beyond Odia cinema—he also showcased his talent in 30 Bengali films and even a Hindi movie, Naya Zaher.

Apart from films, Mohanty also left an impact on television with his performances in popular serials like Sara Akasha.

Recognitions and Legacy

For his immense contribution to the industry, he was honored with the prestigious Jayadeb Puraskar in 1999, the Odisha Living Legend Award in 2012, and multiple Odisha State Film Awards for Best Actor.

His legacy continues through his family—his wife, Aparajita, and son, Babushaan, both of whom are celebrated actors in the Odia film industry.
