1.06 lakh winged guests arrive in Bhitarkanika


KENDRAPADA: A total of 10,6356 winged guests have thronged Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary in Kendrapada district of Odisha this year, said the census report released on Monday.

However, it was less against last year.

While 10,6356 winged guests have arrived the national park this year, 1,13,226 migratory birds were spotted in 2014, which is 6870 less.

87 species have come to Bhitarkanika while it was 109 last year, said Rajnagar DFO.

The birds’ habitat spread across around four-hectares-stretch. They wing their way in and around the water bodies adding to the scenic beauty of the place.

There was ample of food security for the birds as the place crisscrossed by innumerable water inlets and nullahs is free of human interference, officials said.

Lack of human intervention, ideal climatic condition, cool breeze and the river system here all have emerged to the liking of these delicate chirpy winged species.
