Minor girl sets herself on fire after being raped in Odisha

DHENKANAL: In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old minor girl committed suicide by allegedly setting herself on fire on Sunday in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district after she was raped by a man in his village.

The incident took place at Bhagbanpur village under Dhenkanal Town Police Station.

The family members of the deceased said the minor girl set herself on fire pouring kerosene on her body fearing public shame after being raped on Saturday night,

Dhenkanal ASP Anil Kumar Dash said, as per prima facie report, the minor girl went outside her house late on Saturday night when a youth in the neighbour allegedly took her with him. However, family members brought the minor girl back home after a search.

Dash said the minor girl took the extreme step when no one at home on Sunday morning.

“The minor girl burnt herself after pouring kerosene on her. The deceased’s mother is alleging the youth in neighbour raped her last night,” said ASP.

He said the police is investigating into the matter and have sent the body for autopsy.

The minor girl’s mother alleged that her daughter burnt herself fearing shame for her father, uncle and sisters.

The raped minor girl was mentally depressed as she told her sisters, the sources added.
