Classical singer Pandit Jasraj to perform at Bhubaneswar IG Park

Bhubaneswar: Eminent Hindustani Classical Singer Padma Vibhusan Pandit Jasraj will perform at the Indira Gandhi Park in Bhubaneswar on December 17.

He will perform as a part of the “Music In The Park” program organized jointly by the SPIC MACAY and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) at 6 pm on December 17.

He will be accompanied by Pandit Ram Kumar Mishra on tabla and supported by Sougata Banerjee among others.

BDA has entered into an understanding with SPIC MACAY to help organize at least two major classical music events every year in one of the major public parks of Bhubaneswar in line with the “Music in the Park” held regularly in Delhi’s Nehru Park.

Bhubaneswar will be only the third major cities after Delhi and Jaipur to organize such a program. Earlier SPIC MACAY had on its own organized Music In the Park in 2011 featuring Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (Hindustani flute) and Ustad Shahid Parvez (Sitar) in lead up to the national convention held at Ravenshaw University.

Pandit Jasraj belongs to the Mewati Gharana of Hindustani classical music. Jasraj was born in Hisar, Haryana in an orthodox Brahmin family to Motiram, a classical singer. His early guru was his uncle Pandit Maniram.

Pandit Jasraj’s vocal range extends three-and-a-half octaves and uses precise diction, a trademark of the Mewati Gharana’s style of khayal.
