New Delhi: The 200-year completion of Buxi Jagabandhu’s Paika rebellion will be commemorated across the country.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced it while presenting the annual budget for 2017-18 in Parliament on Wednesday.
Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the central government would celebrate the Paika rebellion across the country, which will be a great honour for the state of Odisha.
Paika rebellion was an armed rebellion against the British rule in Odisha in 1817. It was started by the Paikas – the warrior community of the state – under the leadership of Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Mahapatra. Buxi Jagabandhu was the military general of King Gajapati Mukund Dev-II of Khurda.
