Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday directed Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik to hold the additional charge of Governor of Odisha following completion of the tenure of Governor Dr SC Jamir.
Tenure of S.C. Jamir, who was sworn in as the Odisha Governor on March 21, 2013, ends on Tuesday.
“The President of India is pleased to appoint Shri Satya Pal Malik, Governor of Bihar to discharge the functions of the Governor of Odisha, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Odisha is made vice Shri S.C. Jamir, who is completing his tenure on March 20, 2018,” said a President’s Secretariat communique.
Hailing from Baghpat district in western Uttar Pradesh, Malik is a law graduate and he began his political career in the 1970s as a member of the UP state Legislative Assembly.
He got elected from Aligarh Lok Sabha constituency on a Janata Dal ticket in 1989. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha for two terms.
Jamir, five times Chief Minister of Nagaland, had served as the Governor of Maharashtra, Governor of Gujarat and Governor of Goa.
Incidentally, Jamir delivered the customary Budget Speech at the Odisha State Assembly on his last day of the office today.
