Durga Puja 2024 in Bhubaneswar is set to be a grand and festive celebration with the city gearing up for one of the most significant events of the year. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already started preparations to ensure that this year’s festivities are not only bigger but also safer and more sustainable. With 185 pandals expected to be set up across the city, surpassing last year’s count of 178, the state capital is preparing for an unforgettable Durga Puja experience.
Increased Number of Pandals for 2024
In 2024, Bhubaneswar will witness an increase in the number of Durga Puja pandals, with a total of 185 installations. Last year, 178 pandals were erected, showcasing the growing scale of this beloved festival in the city. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking proactive steps to manage the larger crowds and ensure smooth celebrations.
Focus on Infrastructure and Safety
Mayor Sulochana Das has emphasized the importance of completing all road repairs before the festival begins, ensuring smooth transportation for devotees and visitors. The BMC has directed that all damaged roads be repaired on priority, while defunct streetlights are to be identified and fixed immediately to enhance safety during the night-time festivities.
In addition, Bhubaneswar police will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order. Police “mitras” (volunteers) will be deployed at each pandal to monitor the crowds and keep an eye on potential anti-social activities. To further ensure public safety, late-night security will be overseen by the Commissionerate Police, with 38 platoons of police (each comprising 30 personnel) stationed in Bhubaneswar. In neighboring Cuttack, 64 platoons will be deployed for similar safety measures. Around 200 additional police officers and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel will be on duty at key locations in both cities.
Eco-Friendly Durga Puja Initiatives
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has announced several eco-friendly measures for Durga Puja 2024, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible celebrations. The use of biodegradable materials and natural colors for the Durga idols has been mandated to reduce environmental impact. Puja committees are encouraged to avoid plastics and instead use eco-friendly alternatives such as paper plates, cups, banana leaves, and clay cups for serving prasad.
The city also plans to promote responsible idol immersion by designating specific water bodies to prevent water pollution. The BMC’s sanitation wing will visit each pandal twice a day to ensure proper waste collection, and adequate dustbins will be placed at all pandals to maintain cleanliness.
Health and Sanitation Measures
To enhance hygiene and health during the festival, the BMC will provide mobile health units through ADUPHO to cater to health emergencies at pandals. Temporary toilets will also be installed at larger pandals to accommodate the increased number of visitors. These efforts aim to maintain public health and ensure that the event runs smoothly for everyone.
Traffic and Crowd Management
Bhubaneswar Durga Puja 2024 celebrations often draw massive crowds, and this year, special traffic regulations are being put in place to manage the influx of visitors. The Odisha Police will implement measures to curb petty crimes such as chain snatching, ensuring a safer environment for all. Additionally, fire and structural safety at pandals will be a top priority to prevent any unforeseen incidents.
Elaborate Security in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack
For 2024, Odisha Police is rolling out extensive security arrangements in both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. In total, 187 pandals will be set up in Bhubaneswar, while Cuttack will see 166 pandals. Both cities will have dedicated security personnel stationed at key points to manage crowd flow and prevent disruptions. Special security measures, including fire safety and structural stability of pandals, are also being enforced to ensure that the event remains both joyful and safe.
