Series of lectures by eminent scientists to mark National Technology Day


Bhubaneswar: A series of four lectures by eminent scientists and technologists have been lined up in Bhubaneswar from May 17 to celebrate the National Technology Day observed across the country on May 11.

Four eminent scientists/technologists will be delivering distinguished lectures which is being organised by the Bhubaneswar Chapter of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), its Chairman Prof. Damodar Acharya said.

The lecture series is being jointly hosted by Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University, IIT Bhubaneswar, National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) Bhubaneswar and CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar, Prof. Acharya, presently Chairman of SOA’s International Advisory Committee and former Chairman of AICTE, told a news conference here on Tuesday.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Sarangi, former Director, NIT, Rourkela, Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, SOA, and Prof. Subhransu Ranjan Samantaray, professor at IIT, Bhubaneswar and Chair, IEEE Bhubaneswar Section, were present at the press conference.

The National Technology Day is celebrated to commemorate the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran on May 11, 1998 and recognize the achievements of Indian scientists, researchers and engineers. The theme for this year’s National Technology Day is ‘Empowering a Sustainable Tomorrow Through Innovation.’

The four distinguished scientists who will deliver the lectures will be Dr. A.K. Tyagi, Dean and Senior Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai and former Director, Chemistry Group and Bio-Science Group, BARC, Dr. Kota Harinarayana, Chairman, Board of Governors IIT (BHU) and former Project Director and Chief Designer, Light Combat Aircraft, Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Dr. Binay Kumar Das, Director General, Electronics and Communication System, DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Prof. Acharya, also former Director of IIT Kharagpur, said. While Dr. Tyagi’s lecture will be held in SOA Deemed to be University on May 17, the venue of Dr. Harinarayana’s lecture on May 19 will be IMMT Bhubaneswar.

Dr. Narayanan will speak at NISER Bhubaneswar on May 21 while Dr. Das’ lecture will be held at IIT Bhubaneswar on May 23. All the lectures will begin at 3.30 pm.
