SUM Hospital organises workshop on rehabilitation of pelvic floor muscles through physiotherapy

Bhubaneswar: A two-day hands on workshop on Transvaginal and Transrectal pelvic floor rehabilitation, the first of its kind to be held in Odisha which was organised at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here, concluded on Sunday.

Altogether 77 women delegates from across the country attended the workshop organised by the hospital’s department of Physiotherapy which had Dr. Dhara Shah, an expert physiotherapist from Ahmedabad, as the resource person.

Pelvic floor muscles are crucial as they extend support to organs like the urinary bladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, ureters, rectum, anal canal, testes and prostate gland and control bowel and bladder function.

The workshop focused on ways to deal with urine and stool leakage, prolapsed uterus, constipation, sexual dysfunctions like vaginismus and dyspareunia.

The hospital’s department of physiotherapy plans to set up a first of its kind clinic to deal with sagging tummy, sagging breast and vaginal tightness without employing any device, hospital sources said.
