Two more Odisha debt-ridden farmers commit suicide


BHUBANESWAR: The farmer suicide cases continue unabated with two more distressed farmers dying on Tuesday unable to bear the crop loss stress and loan repayment.

Susil Patra of Khadgipalli village in Dhankarada area in Sambalpur district died at the Veer Surendra Sai Medical Science and Research (VIMSAR) while undergoing treatment. He had consumed poison on Monday evening and was admitted at the VIMSAR in a critical condition.

Sources said Susil had grown paddy on his land and had taken Rs 50,000 loan from money lenders for the purpose.

However, the crops got damaged due to scanty rainfall. Seeing no alternative to repay the loan he took the extreme step.

In yet another incident, Labyna Santa of Purunapali village in Nandahandi block in Nabarangpur district also committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

He has grown paddy in his three acre land had taken Rs 30,000 loan from money lenders for cultivation.
