Giraffe Brought To Nandankanan, Bhubaneswar Died

BHUBANESWAR: The male giraffe ‘Joy’, who was brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park here from Kolkata-based Alipore Zoo in exchange of four Tigers, died on Monday.

The giraffe was brought from Alipore Zoo in exchange of four Tigers and was kept with Khushi, the lone female giraffe at Nandankanan.

The zoo authorities had expected that mating between Joy and Khushi would lead to rising in the number of giraffes in the zoo.

Forest and environment minister Bikram Keshari Arukh has directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) to probe into the matter.

Nandankanan authorities said that they could ascertain the cause of death only after conducting an autopsy. Notably, a giraffe had died in 2008, while being brought to Nandankan, as the vehicle carrying the animal came in contact with an electric wire.
