JHARSUGUDA: The Jharsuguda Town Police on Saturday busted a motorcycle theft racket and arrested five gang members. The police also seized 36 stolen bikes from their possession.
The gang was involved in selling the stolen motorcycles at a reasonable price with fake documents, said police.
They had taken the motorcycles from various areas of Jharsuguda like Vishal Mega Mart, Big Bazaar area, Railway Station and Friday Market area. The police are investigating into their involvement in lifting more bikes in a similar way.
The arrested have been identified as Rajeev Patel (32), Somnath Thakur (28), Naresh Singh Chandal (25), Mangal Bhol (45), and Babulal Chatria (40).
Jharsuguda SDPO B.K. Nanda said, “Jharsuguda and neighbouring areas had witnessed a surge in bike thefts during past two years. We have nabbed the gangs involved in this racket and have seized 36 bikes.”
He said they had arrested the chief kingpin of this racket Rajeev Patel, a resident of Barpali, Bargarh.
Rajeev used to commit the crime, and other four sell the bikes with the help of fake documents prepared by Rajeeb.
“Rajeev had resorted to stealing motorcycles to get easy money. He used to roam in the town and identify busy streets. He would keep a watch on any person who parked his bike and went to work, Nanda added.
