Jajpur: A local court in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Tuesday sentenced a youth to 26 years in prison for raping a minor girl.
Kalandhi Mallick (24), son of Gourang of Daniabar village under Jajpur police limits was identified as the convict. District and sessions judge Padmacharan Dash awarded the jail term and imposed a penalty of Rs 90,000 on the accused.
He would undergo an additional ten months jail term if he defaults on the fine, the court ruled.
According to the case diary, the incident occurred on September 15, 2013. Kalandhi along with a minor boy abducted the girl while she was on her way to a local temple.
Later, they took her to an isolated place and took turns raping her. They repeatedly raped her and fled after committing the heinous act. The girl returned home and narrated the ordeal to her mother.
Family members registered a written complaint with Jajpur Road police station in this regard. Police registered a case and arrested the accused Mallick and produced him in court. The judge pronounced the verdict after examining the statements of 15 witnesses in the case.
The case of the juvenile was heard in a separate court.
