2,954 people killed in bus accidents during last decade in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: As many as 2,954 people died in 8,047 bus accidents in Odisha during the period from 2006 to 2015, said Transport Minister Ramesh Majhi.

In a written reply to a question of Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinpati, Majhi told the Assembly on Saturday that about 2,954 people died in 8,047 bus accidents in the state.

While there were 872 accidents in 2006, 287 people were killed. In 2007, there were 828 accidents in which 272 died, in 2008 in 861 accidents 318 died, in 2009, in 917 accidents 301 died, in 2010 in 821 accidents 320 people were killed.

Similarly, 391 died in 909 accidents in 2011 while 262 died in 719 accidents in 2012. In 2013, 231 died in 720 accidents, in 2014 in 766 accidents 332 died and in 2015 in 634 accidents 240 people died.

Nearly, 2,993 buses which are more than 10 years old are plying in the state, said the Minister.

Bus registered with Govt

Similarly, the Minister in reply to another question by Independent MLA Sanatan Mahakuda, the Minister said till March 2016, a total of 28,578 Government and private buses have been registered.

Out of which 7,770 buses are running and presently, the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) have not been made mandatory, said the Minister.
