IIIT-Bhubaneswar to start ‘Finishing School’ from current year

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to increase employment opportunities for engineering students, the Odisha government on Tuesday decided to start a specialized programme ‘Finishing School’ at International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bhubaneswar.

In a meeting of the Board of Governors of IIT, chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi directed officials to make the course industry oriented through direct interface with the industries.

He also directed IIIT to connect their students to loan subvention schemes of the Government so that no eligible students are deprived of higher education opportunities.

The finishing school would be started from the current year. Around 300 students are likely to be trained during this academic year in different batches. The first batch will start in July, 2017.

The opportunity can be availed by any graduate from Odisha in Electrical science, Communication Engineering and Information Technology.

The cost per student for this training has been estimated at Rs.6000 out of which half will be borne by the Government and the rest by the student.

Padhi also asked the IIIT to connect their students to loan subvention schemes of the state government so that no eligible students gets deprived of the opportunities for higher technical education because of his inability to afford for it.

The state government provides interest subvention to banks for educational loans advanced to the students for higher technical education. This subvention is also made available even during the moratorium period.

The student has to pay only one per cent interest and the balance interest is borne by the government.
