Orthopaedic surgeons of IGH Rourkela successfully conduct a complex surgery


The Orthopaedic surgeons of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have successfully conducted a multifragmentary distal femur intra articular fracture surgery on a 15 year old child Kartik Patra under CSR initiative.

Kartik Patra, a resident of Gua, Singhbhum, Jharkhand was admitted in the Orthopaedic Ward of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) on 6th May 2022, after he fell down from his bike. As per the X ray report the child suffered from left multifragmentary distal femur intra articular fracture.

After deliberations Dr L K Biswal, CMO (M&HS), Dr Daulat Saraf, Consultant (Orthopaedic Surgeon) and Dr. Somnath Baskey, Consultant (Orthopaedic Surgeon) conducted the complex surgery on 11th May.  Skilled anesthesia was administered by Dr Rajlaxmi Panda, Deputy CMO, Dr Sanjukta Panigrahi, Additional CMO and team members of Department of Anesthesiology, IGH. During surgery great assistance was provided by operation theatre-1 Sister Incharge Adwanti Minz and team of Technicians, CSSD Technician and Dressers.

Meticulous preoperative and post operative support was provided by Surgery Ward Senior Nursing Sister Incharge Mrs Dulari Samad and the team of paramedics comprising  surgery ward dressers and hospital attendants.

The surgery involved high risk of epiphyseal injury. Hence a high level of care, critical thinking and logical reasoning was extended by the surgeons to prevent any such injury . The stitches were removed on complete healing of the wound. Kartik Patra is now undergoing physiotherapy and CPM to regain his left knee motion. He is recovering well under supervision of Orthopaedic Surgeons of IGH.
