Mudhol Hounds join Odisha Police: Enhancing search operations and security with elite canine force

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police has expanded its K-9 unit by introducing new members from the renowned Mudhol hound breed.

Known for their speed, stamina, and keen sense of smell, these canines will play a crucial role in enhancing the agency’s capabilities in search operations, suspect apprehension, drug detection, and explosive identification.

According to sources, nine dogs have been added to the force, including three Mudhol hounds, marking the first time this breed has been inducted into the Odisha Police.

Native to Karnataka’s Bagalkote and Vijayapura districts, the Mudhol hound is celebrated for its loyalty, bravery, and swift running ability. The breed is recognized by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) and the Indian National Kennel Club.

The Crime Branch of Odisha Police procured three Mudhol puppies from Karnataka’s Canine Research and Information Centre (CRIC), and they are currently undergoing specialized training at the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force’s National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD) in Panchkula, Haryana.

Their handlers are also stationed there for training, sources said.

Mudhol hounds have already gained national prominence, serving in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Special Protection Group (SPG), the Indian Army, and various paramilitary forces. In 2018, they made headlines when PM Modi praised their deployment in a new battalion for national security.
